Prunus serotina. Native Black Cherry is a tall (50-60 ft at maturity) tree prized for its beautiful lumber, but also invaluable to wildlife. University of Maine's extension services claim that not only are the cherries an important food source for birds and mammals, but the tree also hosts over 200 species of moths and butterflies. You'll also love the many small white cherry blossoms in spring.
Fruit can be made into jellies and jams, but please note all parts of this plant are highly toxic to humans except the fruit. (do not eat the pits).
Prefers full sun and moist but well drained soil.
